How do I set up the four-eyes principle/two-person rule?

Use the four-eyes principle to optimise your workflows, ensure compliance with regulations during release processes, and quickly spot potential errors.

The “four-eyes principle” function in Scompler enables you to set up your daily release processes in compliance with regulations. To ensure this process runs smoothly, the following conditions must be met:

  • The function can only be activated if approval is also activated in the workflow.
  • The four-eyes reference task takes place before approval.
  • Only one task can be designated as a four-eyes reference task.
  • The approval and four-eyes reference task must be completed by different users. This means that the user who has completed the reference task cannot grant final approval.

NOTE: You can include as many tasks between the four-eyes reference task and the approval as needed for your workflows.

Activating the four-eyes principle in the workflow

To do this, navigate to the workflow area under Strategy. Here you can create a new workflow or edit an existing one. First, identify the task which requires approval and activate it using the button in the “Approval” column. The button will turn from grey to pink when activated. Next, select the four-eyes reference task and activate it with the button in the “Four-Eyes” column — note that the reference task must be completed before approval.

Four-eyes task in the workflow in the article card

Open the article card that contains the workflow you just edited. Here, you'll see the four-eyes reference task marked with an eye icon. Now you can proceed with the task assignment. Remember to assign the release and the four-eyes reference task to two different users.

TIP: Defining roles in the workflow helps you to assign responsibilities. In this article, you will learn how to create roles, assign them to your colleagues or teams, and define them in the workflow.
